The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), www.disciples.org, came to be in the early 1800s. Our founders, from Presbyterian and Baptist backgrounds, created a unique Christian denomination. Jesus, the Spirit’s leading, and the Bible were central to them.
Also, unique to them was the absence of creeds, a commitment to Christian unity, and at a time when scientific and social advances, and Biblical interpretation were dividing denominations, our founders did not find the Bible, science, and social progress to be in contradiction with one another.
First Christian Church in Carbondale was one of the partners in the founding of Southern Illinois University.
First Christian Church continues today on the land the city set aside for 4 churches – Methodist, American Baptist, Presbyterian, and First Christian.
